College basketball: Sauk women win, men lose in Chicago

Sheldeen Joseph paced a balanced attack with 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Sauk Valley women’s basketball team to a 69-67 victory against Malcolm X on Saturday in Chicago.

The Skyhawks (4-1) trailed 41-32 at halftime before rallying.

Morgan Dean had 16 points and five rebounds, Jordan Giddings had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, and Aleena Hammelman contributed 15 rebounds, 10 points and eight assists.

Javonna Smith led Malcolm X (1-1) with 19 points.

Men’s basketball

Malcolm X 106, Sauk Valley 98: Carlos Hendrix dropped in 28 points and dished out eight assists for the Skyhawks in a road loss to the Hawks.

Also for Sauk Valley (3-1), Jacoby Posley had 18 points, and Chris Fritsch grabbed 12 rebounds and added six points.

For Malcolm X (3-1), Will Martinez had 29 points, and Jovany Austin scored 27 points and grabbed 21 boards.
