Six locals tabbed
Four Oregon Hawks and two Rock Falls Rockets were named to the Big Northern West all-conference team, while two from each team were honorable-mention selections on the squad, released Thursday.
Oregon seniors Pierce Dhaese (DL) and Sawyer Reynolds (LB) were defensive picks, while classmates Nick Newman (RB) and Travis Burke (OL) got offensive nods. Rock Falls seniors Nick Yates (LB) and Austin Donoho (SE) joined the Oregon quartet.
Rockets juniors Jacob Mammosser and Lucas Newburgh were named honorable mention, as were Hawks senior Tyler Blume and junior Garrett Rude. A complete list of the team can be found on B3.
Packers TE Finley to have spine fused
Packers tight end
Jermichael Finley plans to have spinal fusion surgery, and intends to play football again.
Finley’s agent, Blake Baratz, said Thursday that Finley has been working with the Packers organization in determining what’s best after suffering a neck injury last month in a game against the Browns.
Baratz said it was collectively determined that surgery may not be 100 percent necessary, but is a “proactive measure that should alleviate future risks with regards to a similar episode or re-injury.”
Peyton Manning was back on the practice field for the Broncos on Thursday they prepared for an AFC West showdown against undefeated Kansas City on Sunday in Denver.
Manning missed Wednesday’s practice with a sore right ankle.
Kubiak to return to sideline Sunday
Texans coach Gary Kubiak is back after recovering from a mini-stroke and will coach his team on Sunday against Oakland.
Kubiak, who returned to work on Monday, spoke to reporters Wednesday for the first time since collapsing on the field at halftime in Houston’s loss to Indianapolis on Nov. 3.
He said doctors have limited his work this week, but that he will lead the team when the Texans try to break a franchise-record seven-game losing streak when they play the Raiders.
Reed signs with Jets, will face Ravens
Ed Reed signed with the New York Jets, who will play his former team, the Ravens, in Baltimore Nov. 24.
The Jets agreed to terms with Reed 2 days after Reed was released by the Houston Texans. He played for Baltimore for the first 11 seasons of his NFL career.
Rose sits out again with hamstring
Derrick Rose didn’t participate in practice for the second straight day Thursday, but vowed to play through his injured right hamstring Friday when the Chicago Bulls begin their first set of back-to-back games in Toronto.
Rose suffered the injury in the final minutes of Monday’s victory over the Cavaliers. The Bulls had Tuesday off, and Rose underwent treatment for a third straight day Thursday.
Five-star DE Hand picks Alabama
Five-star defensive end Da’Shawn Hand, one of the 2014 recruiting class’ most coveted prospects, announced his commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday.
The 6-foot-4, 254-pound Hand, from Woodbridge, Va., chose Alabama over Michigan and Florida. He is Alabama’s 23rd commitment in the 2014 class, and the third five-star.
