Eastern Illinois, UIC earn wins; DePaul, SIU-Edwardsville fall

Terone Johnson scored 17 points to help Purdue defeat Central Connecticut State 109-73 in West Lafayette, Ind.

It was the highest point total by a Purdue team since scoring 119 against LIU-Brooklyn on Nov. 14, 1997.

Purdue center A.J. Hammons returned after missing both exhibition games and the regular-season opener for violating team rules. He had 12 points, seven blocks and five rebounds in just 17 minutes.

Bucknell 90, Penn State 80:
Steven Kaspar scored 25 points, and Cameron Ayers added 19 as Bucknell defeated Penn State in a wild, back-and-forth game between two nearby Pennsylvania schools in State College, Pa.

Bucknell (1-1) shot 61 percent from the floor (28-for-46) and 67 percent from 3-point range (10-for-15).

Penn State (1-1), led by D.J.
Newbill (18), Ross Travis (17), and Brandon Taylor (17), found itself in foul trouble early.

E. Illinois 67, Olivet Nazarene 60: Alex Austin scored 18 points, and Dennis Green had 17 off the bench as Eastern Illinois held off Olivet 
Nazarene in Charleston.

The Panthers (1-1) had a 15-point lead with just under 15 minutes left, but the Tigers (1-2) cut that to three with more than 9 minutes remaining before falling back down the stretch.

Southern Miss 75, DePaul 68: Aaron Brown scored all of his team-high 13 points in the second half, and Southern Miss defeated host DePaul 75-68 in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

Michael Craig finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Daveon Boardingham had 12 points and seven rebounds. Southern Miss (2-0) didn’t start a player taller than 6-foot-7, yet finished with a 36-29 rebounding advantage over the Blue Demons, who started three players taller than 6-7.

Brandon Young led DePaul (1-1) with a game-high 23 points and had a team-high six rebounds in the loss.

St. Louis 82, SIU-Edwardsville 58: Jordair Jett scored 16 points to lead four Billikens in double figures in an easy win.

The Cougars (0-2) kept it close for the first few minutes, but St. Louis’ 18-point run led to a 31-13 lead with 5 minutes left before halftime. Donivine Stewart paced SIU-Edwardsville with 14 points.

Illinois-Chicago 87, Roosevelt 65: Junior Marc Brown scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Flames to victory in Chicago.

UIC (1-1) went on a 17-4 run early in the second half and never looked back as it defeated Roosevelt for its first win of the season.
