Johnson competes at nationals

Aubree Johnson, a 2013 graduate of Rock Falls High School, competed at the NJCAA meet on Saturday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Johnson, a freshman at Sauk Valley, ran a personal best 22 minutes, 3 seconds to place 205th out of 281 runners.

Leagues name top rookies for 2013

Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins and Wil Myers of the Tampa Bay Rays have been selected baseball’s Rookies of the Year.

Fernandez, 21, went 12-6 with 2.19 ERA in 172 2/3 innings. He had 186 strikeouts and 58 walks.

Myers, 22-year-old right fielder, hit .293 with an .354 OBP and .478 SLG. He had 13 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Cowboys’ Lee out 3-4 weeks

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee is out for three or four weeks with a hamstring pull.

Lee was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s 49-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Lee had an MRI on Monday. He said after the game that the injury was “not good.”

Manning aggravates ankle injury

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning aggravated an ankle injury during Sunday’s win over the San Diego Chargers, but will not miss any games.

An MRI on Manning’s injured right ankle revealed no new damage, according to the report.

Martinez’s college career could be over

Injured Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez might never play another game for the Cornhuskers.

Martinez, a senior, has missed the last two games and five of the last six with a variety of injuries, and an injury to Martinez’s foot is the current problem that may not allow him to return this season.

ESPN reported Martinez might need 6 to 8 months to recover from the injury located between Martinez’s second and third toes.

Illini lose left tackle for OSU game

When Illinois faces Ohio State and the Buckeyes’ third-ranked defense in the Big Ten, it will be without a key cog on the offensive line.

Left tackle Simon Cvijanovic will miss the game because of a high left ankle sprain he suffered in Saturday’s loss to Indiana, coach Tim Beckman said.

Djokovic dominates Nadal at ATP Finals

The message from Novak Djokovic could not have been more emphatic as he retained his title at the ATP World Tour Finals on Monday with a crushing victory over Rafa Nadal.

Nadal deservedly ends the year as the world No. 1 after an incredible comeback from injury, but the way the Serb ran him ragged in a 6-3 6-4 victory at the O2 Arena was an ominous smoke signal ahead of next year.
