Candidate opposes state graduated tax

Published: Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

My name is Jeff McKinley and a Republican challenging incumbent Democrat Mike Smiddy for state representative in 2014 mentioned in a recent series of articles.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with SVM reporter Dave Giuliani, who, I must note, generally does excellent work and is a credit to your paper. That said, in one recent piece, Mr. Giuliani misrepresented the conversation I had with him.

Mr. Giuliani indicated I had retracted or withdrawn statements and press releases put out by my campaign in the weeks prior. All releases in question are available on my website, McKinleyforIllinois.org.

I may have stated my position in an awkward way, resulting in a misunderstanding between us, because I didn’t intend to and do not retract or withdraw any statements or press releases made by my campaign.

In those releases and statements, I point out my opponent, Mike Smiddy, has thrown his support behind a proposed constitutional amendment to impose a graduated tax hike on Illinois families. Nonpartisan analyses of various forms of this plan indicate this graduated tax hike is likely to impact up to 85 percent of all Illinois families.

For a representative of the people of Illinois to throw his support behind such a careless and cavalier plan to soak the Illinois middle class is reprehensible. I stand by my statements that “regardless of what percentage of Illinois taxpayers is hit by Mike Smiddy’s tax hike scheme,” it represents an undue and inappropriate burden on  Illinois’ middle class.

I’m calling for a sunset to the 67 percent tax hike imposed a couple of years ago, and as your representative in the General Assembly, I’ll do my best to ensure income taxes return to a flat 3 percent. I will not let Mike Smiddy’s graduated tax hike burden see the light of day, if I have anything to say about it.
