Tigers tab Cubs candidate Ausmus

The Detroit Tigers named Brad Ausmus, also a candidate for the vacant manager’s job with the Chicago Cubs, as their new manager on Sunday.

Ausmus traveled to Detroit to complete the deal to replace the recently retired Jim Leyland.

Ausmus, 44, caught in the major leagues for 18 years but has no managerial experience other than with Team Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic earlier this year.

Northern Illinois slips in latest AP poll

Despite a 63-19 victory against Massachusetts on Saturday, Northern Illinois fell one spot to No. 22 in the latest AP poll.

The Huskies swapped spots with Wisconsin, which beat Iowa 28-9 in Iowa City.

Ohio State held at No. 4, and Michigan State jumped six spots to No. 18 after beating then-No. 23 Michigan 29-6 to round out the Big Ten teams in the poll.

Penn State beats Illinois in OT

Christian Hackenberg hit Kyle Carter with a 15-yard touchdown pass in overtime, and Ryan Keiser sealed the Penn State’s 24-17 victory over Illinois on Saturday with an end zone interception.

Bill Belton rushed for 202 yards, the first Nittany Lion (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) to hit the 200-yard mark since Larry Johnson in 2002.

Nathan Scheelhaase’s first pass of OT was picked off by Keiser. With a strong second half, Scheelhaase rallied the Illini (3-5, 0-4) back from a 14-0 first-half hole to give them the lead.

Bears sign defensive tackle Ratliff

The Bears agreed to a 1-year contract with free-agent defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler.

Ratliff, 32, still is recovering from surgery he had last December to repair torn tendons that attach the pelvis to the inside of the leg and from the abdomen to the pelvis. He is likely to miss at least 4 more weeks.

Former Blackhawk Bolland has surgery

Toronto Maple Leafs center and Blackhawks castoff Dave Bolland had surgery after his leg was cut during Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks.

Bolland was checked against the boards in the second period by Vancouver’s Zack Kassian, whose skate appeared to make contact with the lower part of Bolland’s left leg.

76ers open 3-0 after stunning Bulls

The Philadelphia 76ers overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to beat the Chicago Bulls 107-104 on Saturday in Philadelphia.

Rookie Michael Carter-Williams had 26 points and 10 assists for the 76ers, who are now 3-0.

Carlos Boozer led the Bulls with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Luol Deng had 20 points.

Still dealing with neck soreness, Derrick Rose finished with 13 points and six assists for Chicago.
