DIXON – Officials believe a person is still inside a rural Dixon home that was heavily damaged by fire this morning.

Neighbors say a man and a woman live in the house, near Kilgore and Clearview roads west of Dixon. The man wasn't in the house at the time; the woman isn't accounted for.

The man is now outside the home being comforted by others, neighbors say.

Dixon Rural Fire Chief Norris Tucker Jr. said firefighters are sifting through the damage. No one has been found yet.

"The house is mostly gone," Tucker said. "It was a fully involved fire."

Tucker is barring media and others from getting near the site of the fire. Clearview Road is blocked off.

Neighbors are getting through. A postal carrier also was allowed.

The fire was reported at 4:19 a.m., Lee County Sheriff John Varga said.

Niky Druien, a neighbor down the street from the house, said she was in the shower about 4 a.m. when she thought she heard gunshots.

"I thought it was hunters," Druien said. "I looked out and the house was fully engulfed in flames. It was bad."

She called 911.

"There were two guys out on the street," Druien said. "The fire department wasn't here yet."

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
