Dixon native Ross makes All-WAC team

Chicago State senior and Dixon High School graduate Matt Ross made the College Sports Madness All-Western Athletic Conference second team.

Ross averaged 10.1 points, 6.3 rebounds per game and shot .365 percent from beyond the arc last season, which put him on the All-Great West Conference (GWC) Honorable Mention and All-Newcomer teams.


Prosser player strikes official twice

Illinois High School Association soccer official Humberto Ramirez was struck by a 17-year-old senior from Prosser Career Academy, including once in the head, during a Class 2A regional playoff match at Chicago Academy.

Ramirez, 47, said the player, who was arrested and charged as a juvenile, became irate when Ramirez did not call a foul late in the match against Amundsen.


Former MVP Iverson officially retires

Allen Iverson officially called it a career on Wednesday, announcing his retirement more than 3 years after playing his final NBA game with the Philadelphia 76ers. 

Iverson last played in February 2010 with the Sixers. He was the NBA’s top rookie in 1996-97 and won the league’s MVP in 2000-01.


St. Louis man charged for bomb threats

Robert Metzinger, 30, of St. Louis, was charged with a misdemeanor for posting bomb threats on Twitter as the city prepared to host World Series games, officials said on Wednesday.

Metzinger is accused of making threatening references to the fatal bombing at the Boston Marathon last April and the use of a pressure cooker in that explosion.


Illinois-Virginia series set

Illinois and Virginia will play a home-and-home series in 2021 and 2022.

The Illini will head to Charlottesville, Va., on Sept. 11, 2021, and Virginia will visit Champaign on Sept. 10, 2022.

FAU coach resigns amid drug allegations

Florida Atlantic football coach Carl Pelini resigned Wednesday after he was confronted by the school’s athletic director over reports of illegal drug use.

FAU athletic director Pat Chun said Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis tendered their resignations and were escorted off campus by police after being questioned about their ties to illegal substances.


Colorado goalie Varlamov arrested

Starting Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov turned himself in for on domestic violence-related charges.

He was arrested on second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges stemming from an incident on Tuesday.
