Scary haunted houses not for young children

Published: Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

While I enjoyed reading about Haunted Haven receiving the rating of No. 1 haunted house in Illinois [“Haunted house scares up No. 1 ranking,” SVM, Oct. 21], I have concerns about the parent who was there with his 8- and 5-year-old girls.

It was reported that while the 8-year-old girl wanted to go to the haunted house, when she got there, she was in tears, asking her Dad to leave, saying she didn’t want to go through it. Although the article doesn’t say whether this family went through it, I hope that Dad had enough empathy to listen to his daughter and leave.

The article goes on to say that the previous weekend, nine people had wet their pants and one lady was so scared that she vomited. This is not a place to be taking young children.

I would hope that parents have enough sense to know this, but if not, I think these haunted houses should have an age limit of at least 10 years old for children to attend this activity.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
