Newspaper wins 10 awards at NIU

SVM captures six first places

DeKALB – Sauk Valley Media won 10 awards – including six for first place – in the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association’s annual journalism contest.

Awards were presented Thursday during NINA’s fall conference and awards banquet at Northern Illinois University. The NIU Department of Communication sponsors the contest.

SVM Executive Editor Larry Lough won two first-place awards: Best Columnist for various columns from the newspaper’s Saturday edition, and Best Editorial for commentary on the contract approval process of the Sterling School Board.

Assistant Sports Editor Christopher Heimerman also won two first-place honors: Best Sports Columnist for a variety of columns, and Best Technical/Medical Story for his series on concussions of high school athletes.

A first place for Best News Story/Series went to reporter David Giuliani for his ongoing series on township government. He also placed second in Best In-Depth News Story for a report on politics in the office of state’s attorney.

Reporter Derek Barichello also won first place for Best Education Reporting for his coverage of the Dixon teachers strike.

Third-place awards were won by:

– Managing Editor Jeff Rogers, for headline writing for various headlines

– Opinion Page Editor Jim Dunn, for editorial writing for commentary on the sentencing of Rita Crundwell

– Sports staff, for Best Special Section for “Glory of the Game,” the annual preview of the high school football season.
