AMBOY – No person or livestock was injured as a fire Friday destroyed a farm building with an addition just north of U.S. Route 30.
Owner Doug Yocum, 35, was driving on Whitney Road about 1 p.m. when he saw heavy smoke and a heavy fire at a building that housed machinery and hay on his 6 acres of property at 1317 Whitney Road.
The fire was controlled within 45 minutes, despite gusty conditions, said Amboy Fire Chief Jeff Bryant.
Yocum’s livestock huddled together in a fenced-in area just north of the fire scene. None were believed to be injured in the fire.
Two calls for mutual aid were needed, Bryant said: One for Dixon and Dixon Rural departments and another to help with the water supply.
Keeping an ample supply of water was a challenge, as firefighters responded from as far as Walnut and Troy Grove with tankers, the fire chief said.
A liquid petroleum gas tank was cooled immediately.
No cause has been determined, but the fire was still under investigation, Bryant said. The owner said he was uncertain what could have caused it.
