Dixon duo goes 0-2 at state tennis

Sterling, Rock Falls, Newman all win in volleyball

For Hayley Kent and Jessica VanOosten, the mission was accomplished before they took the court at the state tennis tournament Thursday in the northwest Chicago suburbs.

Just pleased to be competing at state for the first time, the Dixon seniors bowed out in two matches. They first lost to Geneva's Margo Hess and Emma Hazel 6-0, 6-2, then lost to Triad's Nikki Steiner and Katelyn Foppe, 6-4, 6-1.

Kent and VanOosten finished their first season competing in doubles with a 22-11 record.


Sterling def. Geneseo 25-21, 25-23: Kaylee Martin filled the stat sheet with six kills, three digs and two aces, as the Golden Warriors locked down second place in the Northern Illinois Big 12 West with a home victory.

Kiarra Harris added seven kills and five blocks for Sterling (26-7, 7-3).

Rock Falls def. Stillman Valley 25-22, 25-9: The Rock Falls Rockets clinched the Big Norhtern West title with a dominating win over the Cardinals at Stillman Valley.

Bailey O'Brien led Rock Falls (20-13, 10-2) with 11 kills. Bailey Schrader added nine kills, while Chelsi Blair had 19 assists. Peyton Milne had 10 service points and three aces.

The Rockets volleyball program swept all three levels of BNC West competition. According to coach Sheila Mammosser, that's the first time that has happened in her 16 seasons at Rock Falls.

Newman def. Bureau Valley 25-23, 25-16: Aubree Schmitt had eight kills as the Comets clinched a share of the Three Rivers North title with a win in Manlius.

Bree de Long and Megan Rosengren each added seven kills for the Comets (19-13, 12-2). Kayci Howell had 14 assists, and Julie Hurd led the team with five digs.

Lindsey Hoffert led the Storm with seven kills. Sydney Lebahn set 14 assists.

Erie def. Prophetstown 25-17, 25-23: After a short drive and some light nail-biting, the Cardinals earned a share of the Three Rivers North title with the Comets.

Rachel Cobert had eight kills and two blocks for Erie, which got seven kills from Savannah Mettler and 18 assists from Mary Chapman.

Katie Fringer had 18 assists, feeding Karlie Stafford and Claire Milnes, who both had six kills for Prophetstown (10-19, 4-10). Katlyn Shirley had five digs and two aces for the Prophets.

Eastland def. Lena-Winslow 19-25, 25-12, 25-23: Makenzie Fink racked up 10 blocks in an NUIC West victory in Lanark.

Ronni Miller added seven more blocks, and Peyton Achs led the Cougars (19-11, 7-6) with six kills.

Aquin def. AFC 25-7, 25-22: Lexie Fore led the Raiders in Ashton with five kills and six service points.

Katie Sondgeroth had five assists for AFC (9-18, 4-9 NUIC East).
