Sauk’s Kent gets sportsmanship award
Sauk Valley Community College sophomore Amanda Kent was given the sportsmanship award during the Region IV tournament Oct. 12.
The honor is voted on by the coaches and given to one player each year.
Colts WR Wayne out rest of season
Colts receiver Reggie Wayne will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Sunday’s win over Denver.
Wayne, 35, became the ninth member of the league’s 1,000-catch club last week. He started 189 consecutive games, the longest streak among active receivers.
Bucs RB Martin likely done for season
Buccaneers running back Doug Martin has a labrum tear in his left shoulder, an injury that could sideline the second-year pro for the remainder of the season.
Martin, 24, sustained the injury during the third quarter of Sunday’s 31-23 loss at Atlanta.
Titans owner Adams dead at 90
Titans owner K.S. “Bud” Adams died Monday in Houston. He was 90.
Adams owned the Houston Oilers since their debut in the AFL in 1960, through a move to Memphis in 1997 and then Nashville, where they became the Titans.
Meriweather gets two-game suspension
The NFL suspended Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather two games for repeat violations this season of league rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players.
Meriweather, a former Bear, was penalized twice Sunday for personal fouls against the Bears.
In the third quarter, he was flagged 15 yards for a helmet-to-helmet hit against receiver Alshon Jeffery. In the fourth, he was penalized for hitting Brandon Marshall in the head.
Packers tight end Finley out of ICU
Jermichael Finley remained hospitalized Monday due to a neck injury, but he tweeted saying he was transferred out of the intensive care unit and has full feeling in my arms and legs.
NCAA to reveal Miami’s fate today
The NCAA will unveil the findings of its long investigation into Miami athletics and release any proposed sanctions at 9 a.m. today.
The probe began about 2˝ years ago. The NCAA about 8 months ago said the Hurricanes did not “exercise institutional control” over former booster and convicted felon Nevin Shapiro’s interactions with the football and men’s basketball programs.
Cabrera might have offseason surgery
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera might need surgery to repair a strained groin he suffered in September, but he is expected to recover by next season, according to team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski.
