Gebhardt wins IESA title

Challand student top runner in 3A; Reagan girls place fifth

Jacob Gebhardt, an eighth grader at Challand Middle School in Sterling, won the IESA Class 3A boys state meet on Saturday at Maxwell Park in Bloomington.

Gebhardt finished the 2-mile race in 10 minutes, 19 seconds. That was 9 seconds faster than second-place finisher Mitchell Guittar, of Wheeling London, at 10:28.

Gebhardt finished 18th in the meet as a sixth grader and then third last year. Also running for the Challand boys were Mikio Martinez, who finished 134th in 11:51, and Kaleb Ponzin, who finished 155th in 12:04.

Challand had one runner in the girls race in Shayla Moorman, who finished 174th in 13:35.

In 2A, the Dixon Reagan girls used pack running to place fifth with 162 points. Lindenhurst Milburn won with 64 points, followed by Dunlap (105), Channahon (116) and Tolono Unity (118).

Kira Goral led the way with a 19th place finished in 12:14. Reagan then placed four runners between 45-53. Leah Drengenberg was 45th at 12:41, followed closely by teammate Hallie Nelson in 46th at 12:42. Nicquelette Fazekas was 48th in 12:43 and Madilyn Barnhart 53rd in 12:48.

Reagan's other runners were Grace Johnson (150th, 13:47) and Madalin Blumhoff (153rd, 13:48)

In the 2A boys, Reagan finished in ninth place with 294 points. They were lead by Collin Grady, who placed 15th in 11:07. Its other runners were Lucas Wedekind (47th, 11:26), Jonathan Rivera (106th, 11:59), Luke Stees (110th, 12:00), Christian Seagren (124th, 12:06), Caleb Carlson (133th, 12:12) and Grant Piller (160th, 12:32).

Sterling's St. Mary's had two runners in the 1A race in Quentin Larson (30th, 11:37) and Matt Hodge (98th, 12:18).


Milledgeville def. Polo 25-12, 25-11: Haley McAuliffe had 10 assists and six aces to lead the Missiles past the Marcos in Polo.

Also for Milledgeville, Kendra Schave had five kills, Kailee Forbes had six assists and Taylor Grenoble added four digs.

For Polo, Alli Reeder had three kills, Carly Hinrichs had two kills, and Hannah Grobe (four) and Emily Ditzler (three) combined for seven assists.

Forreston def. AFC 25-17, 25-15: Rachel Walton had 11 kills and Megan Curry dished 20 assists as the Cardinals topped the Raiders in Forreston.

For AFC (9-18), Krista Beach had four kills, Cassidy Koning had eight digs and six blocks, and Katie Sondgeroth had five assists, five points and two aces.
