Scout program opens military giving options

Published: Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Local girls are starting their own small businesses through Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois’ Fall Product Program.

Gourmet food items and magazines are offered to community members through Nov. 1. Those interested can ask a Girl Scout for an order form, call GSNI’s Fall Product Program hotline at 800-242-5591, ext. 7250, or email an order to info@girlscoutsni.org where it will be filled and delivered by a local Girl Scout.

If customers do not want to purchase items as gifts or for themselves, they can donate to the military in $5 increments. This donation program, known as “Gift of Caring Project Share,” was created especially to show support for military men and women.

A $5 donation purchases one candy or nut item, and four $5 donations buy one subscription to a magazine for a military service member. All candy, nuts, and subscriptions are ordered virtually and donated directly to the military.

The program consists of 12 different nuts and candies, 10 are gluten free. New this year are two collector tins, both filled with chocolate along with Duylce De Leche owls. Food items start at $5; no item is more than $8. There are more than 600 magazine titles with 95 digital magazines, 72 are free with the printed magazine subscription.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
