Boys cross country: Dixon standout takes third, helps Dukes to runner-up finish
Twins peak to top Thorpe
MORRIS – Yorkville twins Jake and Luke Hoffert were the only runners faster than Dixon’s Simon Thorpe.
Thorpe, ranked 30th in the state at 3 miles, had a time of 14 minutes, 54.4 seconds to take third at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet on Saturday at Morris High School.
Jake Hoffert, who is ranked fourth by Dyestat Illinois, won the race in 14:40.1. Twin brother Luke, ranked 10th, was right behind at 14:45.2.
“I came in here planning to win, so I’m a little disappointed,” Thorpe said. “They were better today. I’ll see them again at state, and I don’t plan on losing to them then.”
Thorpe’s fellow senior teammate Cody Sondgeroth finished fifth at 15:22.5. He employed a different strategy that paid dividends.
“I went out pretty slow. I normally go out faster,” Sondgeroth said. “I tried picking it up in the second and third miles, and I did. I got a PR, so that’s pretty good.”
Right behind Sondgeroth was Sterling freshman Jonathan Landis (6th, 15:24.1). Landis does not overthink his races.
“I don’t really have an idea of time, because that throws me off,” he said. “I have places that I want to be. My goal was fifth.”
Landis did not necessarily feel strong throughout the race, even though his result was a large improvement.
“I don’t feel anything when I run. I just run,” he said. “My second mile, I knew I was slowing down, but I just think I’ll have more kick at the end.’”
Dixon, ranked eighth in Class 2A, finished second to seventh-ranked Yorkville, 36-48. Kaneland was third with 78 points, followed by 11th-ranked Sterling at 92.
“We did really good today. We’re closing the split between [our 1 and 5 runners]. That’s good,” Sondgeroth said. “We had a couple guys that did really good and PR-ed.”
The top 21 runners earned all-conference honors. Dixon’s Skylar Mitchell (12th, 15:42.6), Austin Trevino (15:43.5) and Evan Grady (15:49.8) did so, as did Sterling’s Zach Alston (19th, 15:56.5) and Cody Lund (20th, 15:59.8).
Sterling’s Keaton Dir (22nd, 16:04.7) just missed earning all-conference.
