Former Simeon star Reed found dead

Demarius Reed, a graduate of Simeon Career Academy in Chicago and a starter on the Eastern Michigan football team, was found shot to death in his apartment complex near the campus in Ypsilanti, Mich. He was an apparent victim of a robbery.

Reed was the team’s fourth-leading receiver with 15 catches for 185 yards.

Browns QB Hoyer has surgery

Browns QB Brian Hoyer is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery on Friday, and Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said he hopes the QB will be able to return for practice next spring.

The 28-year-old sustained the season-ending injury on Oct. 3 against Buffalo in the first quarter of his third start. It was a devastating blow to the Cleveland native, who had led his hometown Browns to two straight wins while replacing injured starter Brandon Weeden.

White to miss 1st game in career

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White will miss the first game of his 9-year career on Sunday.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection was one of three starters listed as out on Friday’s injury report.

White, Atlanta’s career-leading receiver, played the first five games with a sore left hamstring, catching only 14 passes for 129 yards. He hurt his right ankle in a Week 5 loss to the New York Jets and hasn’t practiced since.

Bulked up Egwu shines in scrimmage

Nnanna Egwu, who gained weight in the offseason and intends to be the focal point of the Illinois offense, scored 17 points in annual Orange-Blue scrimmage on Thursday.

Junior guard Rayvonte Rice also scored 17 points.

Jordan to auction off mansion

Michael Jordan is auctioning his Highland Park mansion. The 56,000-square foot compound with a guest wing and tennis courts was listed for sale in February 2012 for $29 million.

The price was dropped to $21 million before the decision to put it up for auction.

Italy’s tax collector has notified former Argentine World Cup star and coach Diego Maradona that it will begin procedures to freeze his assets in the country to pay off a tax debt of $53 million.

Sports return to Kenya after terrorist act

The African field hockey championships will finally take place in Kenya next month.

The men’s and women’s tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Egypt but had to be moved because of political unrest in that country.

Officials set a new date for early this month in Kenya. Then terrorists attacked Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall in a siege that claimed the lives of at least 67 people and injured many more.
