Ryan Ganson kicked the Geneseo Maple Leafs past the Sterling Golden Warriors 3-1 and to the top of the Northern Illinois Big 12 West standings in the de facto title game Thursday in Geneseo.
Sterling (14-3-4, 8-1-1) freshman Tony Diaz tied the match at 1-1 with a goal off a Jesus Velazquez assist 14:45 into the first half. Ganson – who gave Geneseo (15-5-2, 9-0-1) its 1-0 lead in the fifth minute – scored 2 minutes into the second half. He then assisted on a James Bellenger tally about 5 minutes later.
"That breaks my heart," said Dixon coach Mahmoud Etemadi, whose Dukes will face Sterling on Tuesday in a Rochelle Regional semifinal. "I wanted them to win. I really enjoy watching Sterling play."
Dixon 4, LaSalle-Peru 0: Reid Deets had two goals and an assist for the Dukes (1-14-2, 1-8-1), who jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Sonny Baratta's goal 7 minutes into action. Deets doubled the lead in the 48th minute before making it a 4-1 game midway through the second half.
Brandon Jagitsch made five saves for Dixon, a couple of them on glaring scoring chances.
"He had an outstanding game," Etemadi said.
Erie def. Newman 25-20, 25-21: Savannah Mettler had eight kills, and Rachel Cobert had seven as the Cardinals seized a tie with the Comets for the Three Rivers North lead in Erie.
Rachel Humphreys had five kills, Julie Hurd added five digs, four kills and four service points, and Kayci Howell had seven assists for the Comets (16-9, 10-2).
Mettler also dug up 10 balls, and Courtney Cobert dug up 10. Mary Chapman had 19 assists and five digs for Erie (10-2 TRAC).
Morrison def. Riverdale 25-18, 26-24: Chelsea Eads had nine kills, eight digs and an ace, helping the Fillies win a Three Rivers match in Port Byron.
Adrienne Banks added eight kills, two aces and two digs for Morrison (10-15, 5-8), and Brooke Ryan had 14 assists and five digs.
Bureau Valley def. Prophetstown 25-14, 25-21: Lindsey Hoffert and Valerie Reuter both had five kills as the Storm rolled in and won a Three Rivers match in Prophetstown.
Karlie Stafford hammered 12 kills, and Kate Fringer had 21 assists for the Prophets (6-15, 4-8). Sydney Lebahn set 14 assists for Bureau Valley (15-8, 8-4).
Fulton def. Amboy 25-14, 23-25, 25-16: Chelsea Lesniewski had seven kills and three aces for a Three Rivers victory in Amboy.
Betsy Leonard added six kills and two blocked for Fulton (7-15, 6-7), which also got 14 assists, seven digs and three aces from Rachael Beiermann.
Sydney Wilhelm led Amboy (10-15-1, 1-11) with five kills, and Hannah McCoy added four kills and four blocks, while Madeline Ely had seven aces and 15 assists and a block.
Milledgeville def. AFC 25-4, 25-18: Kendra Schave had six assists as the Missiles got off to a quick start at home.
Haley McAuliffe set 10 assists for Milledgeville. Lexie Fore and Cassidy Koning both had three kills for AFC (9-12, 4-7 NUIC East).
Aquin def. Polo 25-19, 25-19: The Marcos couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs in an NUIC East match.
