Fundraiser for literacy work a big success

Published: Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

The fourth annual Power of the Purse was held Sept. 26 at Deer Valley Country Club with more than 200 guests in attendance to support the Literacy Is Fun(damental) for Everyone (LIFE) program, which provides books to children of Whiteside County up to age 5.

The program is delivered through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to more than 1,300 children a month. The committee of LIFE, which organized the event, would like to thank the many businesses and people who made this event even bigger and better than last year.

We thank the more than 60 individuals and businesses who donated purses, gift cards, contents of purses, trips, and desserts for the live auction, silent auction and dessert auction; and the LIFE committee members who met monthly to plan the event, sought the donations, wrapped the auction items, and worked at the event itself.

We thank the Sterling Public Library for the use of the sound system; Ray Sharp for “showcasing” the auction items at the event; Rob Young for his auctioneering of the live auction purses; the people who supported the event through attendance, raffle tickets, and purchase of purses; Nathan Fellows for his preparation of the program and framed descriptions of purses and contents; and Russ Siefken for his oversight and emceeing of the event.

To all of you, a huge thank you is sent. It was because of all of you that this event was a huge success. And by the way, the 2014 event will be Sept. 25.

Note to readers: Betty Clementz was the chairwoman.
