Published: Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

ROCHELLE – HOPE of Rochelle, a domestic violence counseling and support agency, received a $5,000 donation Oct. 11 from Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon’s third annual cellphone drive.

Simon worked with Verizon Wireless to make two donations. The other $5,000 went to a women’s shelter in Cairo. Verizon donated $10 per cellphone collected at Simon’s offices, the Illinois State Fair, the Du Quoin State Fair, and the state Department of Central Management Services.

The phones will be donated to Verizon’s HopeLine program. The refurbished phones will be sold and the proceeds go to domestic violence shelters and programs. The program also gives wireless phones to domestic violence agencies, and provides airtime for use by domestic violence victims.
