City announces availability of energy-efficiency grants

Money coming from state and gas company

ROCK FALLS – Rock Falls residents will have an incentive to make their homes more energy-efficient.

Through an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant, residents of Rock Falls and six other Illinois cities can apply for a combined $325,000 in energy-efficient shower heads, light bulbs, and thermostats, to go along with up to $1,000 in rebates for upgrading furnaces and air-conditioning units, a news release said.

Rock Falls announced the grant opportunity during its City Council meeting Tuesday night.

According to the release:

There are two components to the overall program. The first is the Complete System Replacement option. It allows homeowners to upgrade furnaces and air-conditioning units to more efficient models and apply for rebates.

This first component is available to owners of single-family homes, and multifamily dwellings of three units or less.

The other option is the Multifamily Comprehensive Energy Efficient Program and is available to owners of apartment or condominium complexes with more than five units.

The multifamily program will provide the complex’s residents with water-saving shower heads and programmable thermostats, among other energy-efficient products.

The program will operate as long as the funding lasts, with residents of Rock Falls, Naperville, Princeton, Rantoul, St. Charles, Winnetka, and Farmer City eligible.

To be eligible in Rock Falls, the property owner must be a customer of both city electrical services and Nicor Gas, which is paying for some of the rebates, according to the release.

City Administrator Robbin Blackert recommended residents sign up as soon as possible.
