Americans need to come back to reality

What happened to this country? What is with this sore-loser syndrome and opposition-to-anything-new mentality that has taken effect in this country?

In 2000, we had a president who, let’s just say, did not win under the most ideal circumstances, yet the nation rallied around him after it became clear he would be the next president.

When we were attacked on Sept. 11, the nation rallied around him.

Now in 2013, we have a president who has legitimately won two landslide elections, yet a small fringe extremist section of a party is determined to go to new lows to do anything to oppose this president.

Republicans accused the Democrats of being unwilling to negotiate on Obamacare; this independent voter believes that the Democrats shouldn’t have to negotiate on Obamacare.

Obamacare has gone through all the legal challenges our democracy has to offer. It was debated in Congress; it was upheld by a conservative majority Supreme Court; and finally, the American people spoke loudly and clearly in 2012.

The Republicans believe that a majority of people don’t want Obamacare. Then how come President Obama was re-elected with landslide numbers? How come the Democrats kept control of the Senate? How come Republicans actually lost seats in the House of Representatives?

Sen. George McGovern once called on Americans to come home to the idea that we still have a dream. Today it is time to call Americans back to reality.

“Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell on the right.” – Sen. John McCain
