DIXON – Lee County Judge Ron Jacobson on Thursday set a Nov. 12 trial date for an Amboy man accused in the 2012 beating death of an elderly man in his home.

Matthew W. Welling, 33, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and two counts of home invasion in the death of Delmar Leroy Daniels, 79, also of Amboy.

According to court documents:

At about 7:16 p.m. on July 18, 2012, Amboy Police were called to Daniels’ home at 105 W. Main St.

Upon arriving, officers say they found Daniels lying in a pool of blood. His disabled wife, Betty Daniels, was pinned against a wall by her motorized scooter near her husband’s body.

She told officers that a man with blond hair knocked on the door at about 2 a.m. that morning and struggled with her husband before stabbing him with a pair of scissors.

Near Daniels’ body, officers found a black shirt, a pair of flip-flops and a black necklace that had a small metallic urn containing ashes with the inscription “Alan M Welling 1977-2002.”

Police say Welling later admitted to being at the Danielses’ home after drinking at an Amboy bar and said there was “lots of blood.”

He told deputies that as he ran, he lost his black shirt, flip-flops, and necklace carrying his brother’s ashes.

Welling is in Lee County Jail on $2 million bond. His final pretrial conference is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
