GRAFTON, Iowa – Shirley May Todd, 88, of Rock Falls, formerly of Grafton, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Rock Falls Rehabilitation and Care Center in Rock Falls.   

Shirley was born April 29, 1925, in Grafton, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Mabel (White) Paulsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Grafton Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Shirley attended Grafton School. She married James H. Byrd on Dec. 24, 1943, at Grace Lutheran Church in Richmond, Calif., after which they were employed at the Kaiser Shipyards at Richmond. Shirley later married James H. Todd on May 31, 1974, in Dixon.

Shirley was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Sterling. She was a member and past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 326 in Sterling. Shirley also was also a life member, as a Gold Star Sister, of American Legion Post 902 in Rock Falls, Illinois.

Shirley is survived by a daughter, Mavis J. Christopher of St. Augustine, Fla.; three sons, Ronald K. (Tamera) Willett of Sugar Land, Texas,, and Steven R. Byrd and Jeffrey L. (Rhonda) Byrd, both of Rock Falls; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Todd, in 1988; a brother, Kenneth, killed during the Normandy Invasion; and a sister, Doris Kirchgatter.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, Iowa. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grafton Cemetery in Grafton, Iowa, with the Rev. Solveig A.H. Zamzow officiating.
