Led by sophomore Karissa Freidag, the Eastland girls golf team earned second place in the six-team Class 1A Lena-Winslow Regional on Wednesday at Wolf Hollow Golf Course.
The Panthers finished with a team score of 376, behind just Lena-Winslow (367). Erie (409) also punched its ticket to the Freeport Aquin Sectional slated for Saturday at Park Hills West.
Freidag and Le-Win’s Lexi Graf each carded 8-over-par 80s to tie for low score. Freidag then earned medalist honors with an eagle on the first playoff hole.
Rounding out the Eastland counting scores were Kori Freidag (87), Izy Todd (104) and Sam Feltenz (105).
Erie’s top four golfers were Morgan Newton (97), Lexi Floming (101), Katlyn Weber (101) and Lindsey Tempelmann (110).
Individuals advancing to sectional included Rock Falls’ Kara Nehrkorn (89) and Jessica Stickel (101); West Carroll’s Hayley Guilinger (95); Morrison’s Jaden Workman (100); and Fulton’s Mackenna Munson (101).
Hawks move on: Oregon (438) placed third behind Byron (396) and Rockford Lutheran (418) at the nine-team Class 1A Byron Regional at PrairieView Golf Course. Next up is the Aquin Sectional on Saturday.
Abi Scheidecker was low for Oregon with a 97. Rounding out the Hawks’ lineup were Ali Scheidecker (109), Haley Repass (111) and Abby Martin (121).
The medalist was Byron’s Rachel Hopkins with a 90.
Sterling’s Smith advances: Sterling’s Michala Smith carded a 109 to be among the individual qualifiers at the Class 2A Metamora Regional. Next up is the Springfield (Sacred Heart-Griffin) sectional on Monday.
Galesburg (379), Moline (389) and Minooka (398) were the advancing teams. The medalist was Galesburg’s Taylor Nesselroad with an 82.
Rock Falls def. Winnebago 25-18, 30-28: Bailey O’Brien smashed 16 kills to lead the Rockets to a Big Northern West win on the road.
Dallas Clevenger added seven kills, and Bailey Schrader spiked five for Rock Falls (15-11, 7-2), which sits a half-game behind Mendota for the conference lead. Chelsi Blair dished 21 assists.
Boys cross country
Dixon dominates in Mendota: The Dukes claimed spots 2 through 6 to score 20 points for an easy victory in a five-team meet.
Kylian Lally (2nd, 17:06), Blain Masterson (3rd, 17:18), Owen VanHorn (4th, 17:29), Alex LaMendola (5th, 17:47) and Sean Masterson (6th, 18:01) scored for Dixon, which beat runner-up Hall by 28 points. The Red Devils’ Al Baldonado won the race in 16:40.
Oregon was fifth with 117 points. Austin Burk-hart led the way in seventh place (18:11).
BV edges Rockets for 2nd in Byron: The Storm scored 76 points to beat Rock Falls by one at the Byron Handicap Meet.
Michael Trujillo (7th, 18:14.43) led Bureau Valley, while Seth Williams (8th, 18:15.76) paced the Rockets.
Kaneland won the meet with 16 points, taking the top four spots and five of the top six.
Girls cross country
Dixon perfect in Mendota: The Duchesses swept the top five spots, and placed eight runners in the top 10 in a five-team meet.
Katie Pitman won the race in 20:54, and was closely followed by Courtney Seagren (21:14.3), Ally Stanchfield (21:15), Katie Lawton (21:46) and Haylee Altenberg (21:49). Dixon’s 15 points were well ahead of runner-up Mendota’s 69.
Oregon scored 103 points for fifth. McCahl Sanders (12th, 22:50) and Kim Janke (24:13) were the Hawks’ top-20
Rock Falls 2nd, BV 3rd in Byron: Katie Anderson was third, and Makaley Velazquez took fourth to lead the Rockets to a runner-up finish at the Byron Handicap Meet.
Anderson covered the course in 21:59.70, while Velazquez ran a 22:09.60 for Rock Falls. Byron’s Kelsey Hildreth won in 20:12.40, and the Tigers’ 21 points beat the Rockets by 25.
The Storm were third with 100 points, led by Heather Williams’ 18th-place finish in 23:42.60.
