Bureau Valley’s 36-point second quarter explosion was too much for Morrison to overcome Friday night, as the Storm rolled past the Mustangs 56-26 at Bud Cole Field.

Tommy Johnston had two touchdown runs in a 1:02 span to start the big quarter, and Parker Neuhalfen followed up his 33-yard scoring scamper with 1:46 left before halftime with a 61-yard interception return TD 55 seconds later.

“We were struggling a little bit there going into the game tonight. We needed a few breaks here and there,” BV coach Jeff Ohlson said. “We haven’t gotten any breaks in the last couple of weeks, and tonight, we made our breaks.

“We stepped in front of some passes, picked off a couple of passes, picked up a couple of fumbles, and we did the things we needed to do tonight to be successful.”

Johnston finished with 126 yards and the two TDs, while Tucker Schoff added two TD runs for BV (2-4, 1-2 Three Rivers North). Neuhalfen added a third scoring run, and Will Konneck and tacked on a 40-yard TD run late in the third quarter.

“I thought the kids gave us great energy and great excitement,” Ohlson said. “It was a total team win. These guys can be happy and they can enjoy themselves. We’d been waiting for 2 or 3 weeks for things to pop open, and tonight, it did.”

Austin Shoup scored on a 1-yard run for Morrison (2-4, 1-3) in the first quarter, then Noah Blacklock caught a 65-yard scoring strike from Mason Sitzmore after Johnston’s two TDs in the second period. Justin Jensen connected with Merritt Kennedy on a short scoring pass in the fourth quarter.
