The Sterling boys soccer team won three games to take top honors in the Orion Tournament on Saturday.
Sterling (11-2-4) opened with a 4-0 victory over Canton. Tony Diaz scored a pair of goals, while Santana Trujillo and Jose Uresti added one apiece.
Next was a 2-1 victory against Princeton. Carlos Gallardo’s goal broke a 1-1 tie with just 8 seconds left.
The Warriors wrapped up the tourney title with a 4-1 victory over Alleman. Gallardo had two goals, while Diaz and Peter Delafuente each added one.
Sterling second in LaSalle: Ryan Hurley fired a 7-over-par 79 to lead Sterling to a team total of 329 and second place in the 10-team LaSalle-Peru Invitational at Senica’s Oak Ridge in LaSalle.
Monmouth-Roseville won the event with a team total of 321. Rock Falls was third at 337.
Also for Sterling, Austin Cook had 81, Zach Rehmert had 83, and Kyle Sinn and Trevor Sisson had 86s.
Counting scores for Rock Falls came from Andrew Tichler (83), Trace Hippen (84), Aaron Frank (85) and Cooper Kilberg (85).
Dukes 11th in Lockport: Simon Thorpe finished fourth in 16:02, leading the Dukes to 11th at the 31-team Lockport Invite.
Cody Sondgeroth added a top-25 finish, taking 24th in 16:34. Dixon scored 272 points as a team; Lyons won with 115.
Rockets third in Freeport: Brayden Hamblen and Seth Williams finished sixth and seventh, respectively, as Rock Falls placed third in the 10-team Freeport Invitational.
The Rockets had 108 points, behind Winnebago (45) and Kaneland (78).
Hamblen covered the 3-mile course in 15:41, while Williams was next in 15:49.
Warriors 19th in Peoria: Jon Landis placed 49th with a time of 15:48 as Sterling placed 19th at the 53-team Peoria Central Invite at Detweiller Park.
The Warriors amassed 587 points. Vernon Hills (136) edged Sandburg Gold (142) for the team title.
Storm second in Elmwood: Daniel Trone finished 12th overall with a time of 17:11 as Bureau Valley (82) finished second to Elmwood-Brimfield (56) at the Elmwood-Brimfield Invite.
