Replace WIC handout by getting a job

I am writing to comment on the WIC story in your Oct. 3 issue titled “WIC funds stopped.” While I don’t want to sound mean and petty, I want to be realistic. Stacey Avelar is bemoaning her situation about the loss of WIC.

I have to say that a “stay-at-home mom” is a luxury that the majority of families can no longer afford. If a family cannot survive on one income, then the obvious solution is that two incomes are required. You don’t look for others to feed your children. You don’t have children that you cannot afford to feed.

I do understand there are times when factories close or relocate and that there is a need for temporary assistance. I am a working mother who participated in all of my children’s activities. I was a den mother for the Scouts for 6 years, all with a full-time job.

It was not an option at our house to stay home. My boys have grown to be productive citizens and never felt slighted by the fact that I worked. I would never have expected anyone else to feed my children. As a matter of fact, my husband and I both did a lot more volunteering with our children’s activities than a lot of stay-at-home moms did.

Stacy, it’s time for you to find a job and not rely on the working people who have way too much taken from our paychecks.
