Busy October scheduled for VietNow group

Published: Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 9:41 a.m. CDT

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 26, the Rock River Valley VietNow Chapter will hold our annual Sterling-Rock Falls Tag Day where we stand outside various businesses to hand out for donations for American flags for Veterans Day Nov. 11 and fund our various causes for the year.

We have 81 members from Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties; 61 full and 20 associates. Our membership is open to Vietnam veterans from the 1957 era and to all veterans until now.

For an application, call our membership chairman, Rich Sanders, at 815-288-5872. Dues are $15 a year or a life member for $150.

We’re a family organization. This past year we gave out three, $500 scholarships to area students going to college. We send “care packages” to our deployed troops in Afghanistan as names and permanent addresses become available.

Bill Kessling is our chairman. Please call him at 815-456-2266 with names or call me at 815-784-3530. We call it “Goodness for the Gulf.”

At Christmas last year, we delivered boxes of food and toys to needy families of our veterans. We helped more than 40 families, and we do this every year.

We make available 3-by-5-foot POW-MIA flags to businesses and organizations who will fly them. We furnish the flags, and recipients call us as they need replacement. This year on POW-MIA Day, Oct. 20, we will be adding or replacing flags. Call our chairman, Bill Kessling.

As the Dixon Veteran Memorial Park adds new memorial stones, VietNow presents honorees with a rose. Honor your loved one by buying a memorial stone. Call me or Rich Sanders at the Veterans Assistance office at 815-288-5683 to buy a stone.

The next laying of the stones will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 13. The Beruit Memorial re-dedication is at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Thank you for your support and donations.

Note to readers: Jimmie Austin is the president of the Rock River Valley VietNow Chapter.
