Many deserve credit for Dixon flower projects

Published: Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

On behalf of the Rock River Garden Club, I would like to thank Vicky Turner for her thoughtful letter recently published in the Telegraph. She saluted our club for the work that we do beautifying Dixon with flowers.

Presently our club plants and maintains the pots at the Post House and the planter at the Welcome Center for each season. In addition, we plant and care for the gardens at the Post House, the garden at First and Peoria, as well as the one at the Lincoln Statue.

However, our organization cannot accept credit for the baskets on Galena, Hennepin, and Peoria, as Ms. Turner indicated. Those baskets are under the auspices of Dixon In Bloom, a different group, which funds them through contributions made by individuals and groups. One of those contributing groups is the Dixon Area Garden Club, which makes yearly substantial donations to Dixon In Bloom, as does Rock River Garden Club.

I am sure that it is gratifying for all of the members of Dixon In Bloom, Dixon Area Garden Club, and Rock River Garden Club when our efforts are noticed and appreciated by the citizens of Dixon.

Note to readers: Shirley Vivian is president of the Rock River Garden Club.

Reader Poll

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
Not sure
