Sterling’s Bertrand wins dunk contest
Sterling High School graduate and fifth-year Illinois senior Joseph Bertrand won the dunk contest that was part of the Illini Street Jam on Saturday night.
The season kickoff event was held in the heart of Campustown, and also featured interactive games and competitions with fans, leading up to the dunk contest.
Archery seasons open; permits available
The Illinois archery deer and archery fall turkey seasons opened Tuesday, and permits are available over the counter.
The seasons last through Jan. 19. For more information on permits, visit dnr.illinois.gov.
Bears try out punters to push Podlesh
The Chicago Bears put on a tryout for six punters Tuesday at Halas Hall.
Brian Moorman and Mat McBriar, who both kicked previously for special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis with the Dallas Cowboys, and former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe were the most experienced veterans involved in the tryout.
Also included were Drew Butler, the son of former Bears kicker Kevin Butler, T.J. Conley and Tress Way, who was with the team in training camp and preseason.
NFLPA to investigate Freeman leaks
NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith says the union is looking to investigate how Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman’s presence in Stage 1 of the league’s substance-abuse program became public.
Freeman released a statement in which he said he has a prescription for Adderall to treat ADHD; however, last year he inadvertently took Ritalin, which triggered a positive test.
Freeman, demoted by Tampa last week, has requested a trade but is pressuring the team for his outright release, a move that would allow him to receive all $6.2 million in remaining salary and afford him the freedom to sign wherever he chooses.
Pirates slug way past Reds, into NLDS
Marlon Byrd and Russell Martin both drove in two runs, and Francisco Liriano went seven strong innings, as the Pirates earned a shot at the Cardinals in a National League Divisional Series with a 6-2 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Liriano allowed an earned run on four hits and struck out five. Byrd and Martin both homered in the second, and Martin hit another solo shot in the seventh.
Westbrook out 4-6 weeks after sugery
Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook is expected to miss the first 4-6 weeks of the regular season following arthroscopic surgery to reduce swelling in his knee.
Westbrook first injured the knee in the Thunder’s playoff series against Houston, and had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in the spring.
