Prep roundup: No. 3 the magic number for Sterling tennis in Ottawa

Warriors boys win home cross country triangular

Sarah Trobaugh and Anna Ivarson rallied to win a crucial No. 3 doubles match in Sterling’s 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 West victory Tuesday in Ottawa.

Sterling’s duo rallied past Ashley Backos and Kaitlin Prettyman 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Erin Ansusinha won at No. 1 singles, and Charish O’Neil and Katie Schauff won at No. 2 doubles for the Warriors (9-6, 3-2).

LaSalle-Peru 5, Dixon 0: Maribeth Johnson and Stephanie Tressel took their opponents to three sets, but couldn’t salvage a win for the Duchesses in a Northern Illinois Big 12 West match in Peru.

Katherine Kaszynski and Jena Argubright were able to hold off the Dixon (9-5, 2-3) duo 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles match.

Boys cross country

Sterling 30, United Township 38, Moline 69: Sterling placed six runners in the top 10 to win a triangular meet at Hoover Park.

Jonathan Landis led the Warriors with a fourth-place finish in 17 minutes,
18 seconds. He was followed by Zach Alston, who finished sixth in 17:19. Sterling runners filled the next four positions.

Girls cross country

Moline 27, Sterling 38, United Township 70: The Warriors placed three runners in the top five, but were edged by Moline at Hoover Park.

Maggie McPherson placed second for Sterling in 19:16. She was followed by teammates Megan Barnart in third at 20:32 and Mercedes Sanchez in fourth at 20:43.

Boys soccer

LaSalle-Peru 3, Dixon 1: The Dukes hit the post several times but couldn’t overcome a 3-0 deficit in a Northern Illinois Big 12 loss at A.C. Bowers Field.

Sonny Baratta scored with 25 minutes left in the match for the Dukes (0-11-1, 0-5).

Faith 4, Galesburg Christian 2: Mike Di-
Grazia scored two goals for Faith in Grand Detour.

Andrew Robertson added a goal and an assist, and Ben Bierdemann had the other tally for the Falcons (3-5-1).

Girls golf

Smith, Spencer lead Sterling at conference: Michala Smith and Rachel Spencer both carded 113s at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Meet at Fairways Golf Course in Rochelle.

Tori Guyton earned medalist honors with a 19-over-par 85.Sydney Shearer (133) and Cassidy Peikert (134) rounded out Sterling’s scorecard.

Girls swimming

Boylan 126, Sterling 56: Charli Wike was a part of three event wins as the Warriors dropped a meet at the Duis Center.

Wike won the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 18.17 seconds, and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.14.

She was joined by
Jordan Totten, Erin McCawley and Emily McDonald to win the 200 medley relay in 2:05.81.

Newman 70, Morrison 70: The Comets and Fillies tied in a dual meet at Morrison.

Newman won three events. Elexia Sanders won the 200 freestyle in 2:35.03. Alena Jensen won the 200 IM in 2:39.28.

Newman’s relay team of Sanders, Amy Ryan, Mary McDonnell and Carly Schaab won in 5:12.95.

Morrison’s Michelle Nafziger and Michaela Busch both had four event wins.

Busch won the 50 in 27.52 and the 100 butterfly in 1:10.67.

The pair teamed with Emily Wallander and Amber Vegter to win both the 200 medley relay (2:15.12) and 200 relay (2:00.55).

Nafziger also won the 100 (1:09.89) and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.64).
