City Hall roof construction to begin this week

Federal government shutdown could delay Limestone Building grant, Blackert says

ROCK FALLS – There are tires holding down part of the roof on City Hall in Rock Falls.

Construction to repair the roof is expected to begin this week. In July, the Rock Falls City Council awarded the bid to Sterling Commercial Roofing Inc., the only company to submit a bid, for $321,700.

City Administrator Robin Blackert updated the City Council on the project’s status during its meeting Tuesday night.

The work was scheduled to start Tuesday, but should still begin before the end of the week, she said.

The work will include repairs and renovations to the roofs and sidewalk canopies for the municipal complex buildings, which includes City Hall, the police and fire department buildings.

The city received two state grants, for $303,000 and $30,000, to help pay for the project.

Blackert said she was unsure whether the grants would come through as fast as originally expected. But the city can’t wait any longer to repair the roof, she said. Parts of the roof over the city’s administrative offices are being held down with tires and the roof over the police department is the original that was installed in 1965, she added.

The city has the funds needed to pay for the work even if the state grants take a while to come, Blackert said.

Blackert also updated the City Council on the status of a grant that would help Rock Falls with asbestos abatement during the eventual demolition of the Limestone Building on the city’s riverfront.

The grant would be for $200,000 and hasn’t been submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which recently put grant programs on hold due to lack of funding, Blackert said.

“In light of circumstances with the federal government, you can put two and two together and get four,” she said.
