Race on runway benefits veterans

CHICAGO (AP) – Officials say more than 3,400 people participated in a race down O’Hare International Airport’s newest runway, which isn’t yet open to air traffic.

The O’Hare Run on the Runway 5K and 10K races took place Sunday morning at the Chicago airport. The event benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps wounded U.S. military service members. More than 650 runners and walkers participated in the 10K, and about 2,500 in the 5K. There was also a children’s race, and about 200 children took part.

In a statement, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says it’s a unique event at one of the world’s busiest airports.

The new runway is scheduled to open Oct. 17.

It’s part of a multibillion-dollar expansion that’s aimed at increasing capacity and reducing delays at O’Hare.
