CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois women whose children were killed in combat have been honored in Chicago.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Borggren were among the attendees of Sunday’s event honoring “Gold Star” mothers. The event is dedicated to families of fallen service members.

Mothers at the event were given banners. Illinois Poet Laureate Kevin Stein read his poem honoring the mothers.

Quinn told reporters Sunday that it’s a solemn day and Illinoisans shouldn’t forget about those who have lost loved ones in conflicts overseas.
