Local roundup: Newman boys run to title

Chris Ahlers and Bryson Reyes finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to lead the Newman boys cross country team to the title Wednesday at the Byron Invitational.

The Comets edged Burlington Central by one point, 51-52, for the title. All five Newman scoring runners finished in the top 19 of the race that included 56 runners.

Ahlers had a time of 15 minutes, 32 seconds, followed closely by Reyes (15:34.22).

Eastland’s Cooper Pauley finished 15th (16:12.66).

Girls cross country

Simpson leads area runners: Newman’s Haley Simpson finished ninth at the Byron Invitational with a time of 19:59.

Teammate Teagan McKenna was 11th (20:05). The Comets did not have a complete team. Oregon did and finished fiffth, led by McCahl Sanders (27th, 21:41).

Boys golf

Sterling 155, Ottawa 163: Trevor Sisson’s 1-over-par 36 led the Warriors past the Pirates at Pine Hills Golf Course in Ottawa.

Also for Sterling, Ryan Hurley had 38, Zach Rehmert had 39 and Kyle Sinn added a 42.

Morrison 157, Erie 190, Prophetstown 206: Colton Smith fired a 2-over-par 38 at Lake Erie to lead the Mustangs in a Three Rivers triangular.

Ben Tegeler had a 39, while Noah Hogue and Brock Smith each shot 40 for Morrison.

Koby Kuhnen led Erie with a 43. Prophetstown’s top score came from Grant Ames at 41.

Eastland 184, River Ridge 208: Devin Hartman earned medalist honors with a 6-over-par 42 as the Cougars beat the Wildcats at Storybrook Golf Course in Hanover.

Girls golf

St. Bede 206, Erie 210: Lexi Floming shot a 49 as the Cardinals lost a home match at Lake Erie to the Bruins.

St. Bede’s Aiko Mendoza was medalist with a 44.

Mid-County 227, Mercer County 243, Prophetstown 262: Breanna Sandrock paced the Prophets with a 62 at Hawthorne Ridge in Aledo.


Newman def. Amboy 20-25, 25-20, 25-14: Megan Rosengren had 14 points, nine kills and two aces as the Comets topped the Clippers in Amboy.

Also for Newman (10-4, 6-0 Three Rivers), Aubree Schmitt had nine kills, Allison Shipman had 18 assists, eight points and two aces, and Kayci Howell added seven points, three kills and two aces.

Hannah McCoy had five kills and three blocks for Amboy (5-8-1, 0-6), which also got six kills from Sydney Wilhelm and 16 assists from Madeline Ely.
