Get tough on punishment for gun crimes
When a mechanic blames his tools, you know he is not a good mechanic. When a politician blames the tool used by a criminal and not the criminal, you know he is an opportunistic exploiter of a tragedy.
If we had the will, we could mitigate the tragedies that beset the survivors of the tragedy. We must make sure the perpetrators of the tragedy are properly punished.
Any person convicted of committing a crime using a gun or even a gun replica should be sentenced to a mandatory additional 5 years in prison, with no chance of parole or time off.
Any person who discharges a firearm in the commission of a crime should be sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison.
Any person who wounds a person with a firearm in the commission of a crime should be sentenced to the rest of his or her life in prison with no chance of release.
Any person who murders another person should be sentenced to life imprisonment in solitary confinement with 1 hour out, 23 hours in the cell. No television, no Internet, no books, and no entertainment. Visitation will be by telephone. Meals will be standard prison fare. No smoking. No interaction with any other human being.
This is harsh, but with political will, the chances of this being adopted are slim and fat. This is one time when the adjectives describe the noun but the adjectives have an opposite meaning.
