United Way plans yearly chili competition

STERLING – Registration is due by Oct. 4 for the United Way of Whiteside County's 17th annual Chili Cookoff, planned for Oct. 12 in the parking lot at First Avenue and Fourth Street.

The fee is $50 per team, with all money going to the United Way campaign. Awards will be given for best chili, first, second and third places, people's choice, and best campsite. Cooking will start at 7 a.m., with judging and public tasting at 11 a.m. Tickets to taste chili will be $5 each.

All chili must be prepared on-site. Each team must get a temporary food service permit in advance from the Whiteside County Health Department. Team applications can be picked up at the United Way office, 502 First Ave., or by calling the office at 815-625-7973. Completed applications can be mailed to United Way of Whiteside County, P.O. Box 806, Sterling, IL 61081. Call the office for more information.
