Prep roundup: Pirates tennis downs Duchesses

The Dixon girls tennis team dropped a tightly-contested NIB-12 West match to Ottawa 3-2 on Tuesday at Emma Hubbs Courts in Dixon.

Dixon (7-4, 2-2) got a win at No. 2 singles by Katie Hammitt. She beat Savanna Weitzel 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hayley Kent and Jessica VanOosten won 6-4, 6-2 over Mariah Cavanaugh and Bailey Bradish.

The decisive match came at No. 3 doubles where Ottawa’s Ashley Backos and Kaitlin Prettyman beat Joan Bratt and Rachel Turffs 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2.

Sterling 5, Streator 0: The Warriors swept all five matches in a NIB-12 West match in Sterling.

Maura Scanlan and Erin Ansusinha each won singles matches. Scanlan needed three sets to beat Hannah Warwick 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.

The three doubles teams won in straight sets.

Boys soccer

Oregon 2, Mendota 1: Ian Starkey and Ryan Bennett each scored goals as the Hawks won a Big Northern match at home.

Henry Baldwin and Tony Guajardo each had assists for Oregon (6-6-2, 3-1-1 BNC). Jordan Gilmour had eight saves in net.

Tri-State Christian 7, Faith Christian 0: The Falcons lost a Northern Illinois Christian Conference game to Tri-State in Galena. Faith falls to 1-3-1 for the season.

Girls swimming

Byron 105, Harlem 72: Dixon’s Kaylyn Rice, Kaylee Rice and Abbey Blackbourn helped the Byron Co-op to a home dual win.

The trio teamed up with Kennedy Halsmer to win the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 1.06 seconds. Kaylyn Rice and Blackbourn then teamed up with Paige Iturbide and Kassie Paul to win the 200 relay in 1:52.04.

Blackbourn also won the 50 freestyle in 27.74.
