Opportunity coming to recycle electronics

STERLING – Residential electronics can be dropped off for recycling Oct. 5.

Collection will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the front parking lot of Sauk Valley Media, 3200 E. Lincolnway.

Every household that contributes will enter a drawing for a 32-inch flat-screen television donated by Walmart.

Acceptable items include answering machines, calculators, cameras, cellphones, CD-ROM drives, computers, cables, cable receivers, copy machines, credit card machines, and digital converter boxes.

Also, digital music players, CDs and DVDs, fax machines, floppy disk drives, keyboards, laptops, modems, monitors, mice, pagers, phone systems, printers, postage machines, power tools, and projection TVs.

Also, projectors, scanners, servers, shredders, software, stereo equipment, tablets, iPads, tape drivers, tape recorders, telephones, typewriters, TVs, VCRs, DVD players and video and audio tapes, video cameras, video game players, satellite receivers, electric motors, electric wire, and non-alkaline rechargeable batteries.

Aluminum cans and prescription bottles with labels removed also will be accepted.

Televisions with broken or exposed tubes will not be accepted.

There will be a $10 fee for microwaves; all other items will be taken at no cost.

Whiteside County Solid Waste Management and Secure Recycling Services, a business division of Kreider Services, will host the initiative.

Sponsors include Appelquist Farm & Trucking in Franklin Grove.

A similar event is scheduled for Lee and Ogle County residents Nov. 2 in the parking lot of Raynor Garage Doors, 1101 E. River Road in Dixon. Details will be provided at a later date.

Secure Recycling Services, 629 Palmyra Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily as a residential and business drop-off point. Pickups are available for a fee.
