ROCKFORD (AP) — The public defender for a northern Illinois woman accused of stabbing her 8-year-old son to death has asked for a new judge in the case.

The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/16GnsTI) that public defender David Doll made the request Tuesday on behalf of 39-year-old Jody L. Kossow. The body of her son Thomas was found Sept. 10 on the driveway of his home. Autopsy results show the boy died of multiple stab wounds.

Kossow is charged with first-degree murder in the third-grader's death. She has yet to be formally arraigned.

A hearing is set for Oct. 15 on the public defender's request.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
