Newman wins key Three Rivers North match against Erie

The Newman Comets defeated the Erie Cardinals 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday in a clash of Three Rivers North favorites in Sterling.

Aubree Schmitt had seven kills for the Comets (9-4, 5-0). Megan Rosengren added six kills and seven service points. Allison Shipman had 10 assists, while Kayci Howell had six assists and four service points. Sara Nysather led the team with five digs.

"We just play very clean volleyball," Newman coach Debbi Kelly said. "We played as a team and stayed aggressive. We kept them moving and put pressure on them, and they made mistakes."

Erie had six kills and four digs from Savannah Mettler. Peyton Rus had five kills, two blocks and four digs. Mary Chapman had 14 assists.

Bureau Valley def. Prophetstown 25-21, 25-27, 25-12: The Storm overcame the middle set of a battle of one-loss Three Rivers North teams in Prophetstown.

Lindsey Hoffert had 12 kills and two blocks, and Sydney Lebahn had 23 assists for Bureau Valley (10-3, 6-1).

Claire Milnes led Prophetstown (3-5, 2-2) in kills (11) and blocks (three). Karlie Stafford added six kills and nine digs, and Claire Kramer had seven kills.

Fulton def. Amboy 25-14, 25-18: Chelsea Lesniewski racked up five aces, five digs and four kills for her Steamers in a Three Rivers victory in Fulton.

Betsy Leonard added 10 kills for Fulton (2-10, 2-4).

Milledgeville def. Forreston 26-24, 23-25, 26-24: The Missiles outlasted the Cardinals in three tight sets to send Forreston (14-4, 4-1) to its first NUIC East loss.

Galena def. West Carroll 25-14. 25-22: The Thunder dropped an NUIC West match in straight sets in Savanna.

Aquin def. AFC 25-13, 25-16: Kayla Colwell had 12 digs, but the Raiders couldn't pull the upset in Freeport.

Lexie Fore led AFC (6-7, 1-3 NUIC Eat) with four kills.

Faith wins pair: The Faith Christian Falcons made a trip to Galena and came home with a pair of victories: 25-16, 25-23 against Tri-State, and 25-13, 25-23 over the Cedar Rapids Comets.

Leading the way for Faith (18-1) were Tressa Schuler with 34 digs, 19 kills and 13 aces; Annabeth Rozanas with 16 set assists, seven kills, six digs and four aces; and Sarah Smith with 28 digs, eight kills and three aces.
