NCAA to restore Penn St. scholarships
The NCAA said on Tuesday it would allow Penn State to provide more scholarships for football because the university had made progress in restoring “integrity” following a sex abuse scandal.
The original sanctions called for Penn State to be limited to 65 scholarships – and 15 new scholarship players per season through 2017. Now the NCAA will allow Penn State to have 75 next season, 80 in 2015 and the full 85 in 2016.
NU calls Colter’s decision ‘teachable’
Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald said Tuesday he talked to quarterback Kain Colter about Colter’s decision to write “APU” on his wristbands Saturday during the Maine game.

Fitzgerald called it a “teachable moment.”

He will get a second opinion on the injury and is scheduled to visit doctors again in 4 weeks. Machado will undergo a conservative plan of treatment, and if all goes well, he could return in 6-8 weeks. He should be ready for the start of spring training.
Sox shut down Keppinger, Purcey
White Sox infielder Jeff Keppinger didn’t make the team trip to play the Indians in a two-game series this week, instead staying in Chicago to prepare for exploratory surgery on his right shoulder Thursday.
Left-handed relief pitcher David Purcey traveled to Cleveland, but he left Progressive Field early Tuesday to seek a second opinion about the strained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The original diagnosis is that he does not need surgery and will heal with rest, the Sox said.
The Sox will be without both in the final week of the season.
