DAVENPORT, Iowa – Juanita M. Conchola, 89, of Davenport, joined hands with the Lord and walked into eternal peace on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013.

Juanita Mary Conchola was born on Aug. 7, 1924, in Letts, Iowa, daughter of Martin and Martha (Murillo) Conchola. Juanita graduated in 1942 and then went to work in an ammunition plant.

In early 1943, Juanita joined The Women’s Army Corps at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and was assigned to be a supply clerk. She then earned her first stripe for private first class, buck sergeant and then staff sergeant. When the war ended, Juanita received an honorable discharge along with a Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, World War II Ribbon and Driver Medal. Juanita was very proud of her military service. and in October 2009, she went on the Honor Flight, which was a real highlight in her life. She was a proud member of American Legion Post 26.

Juanita had worked more than 19 years with the former Eagle Signal and retired in 1991 from Midland Press after 13 years.

Juanita, nicknamed Poncho by her teammates, played softball for the Eagle Market Superettes, and in 1949 played shortstop in the National Softball Congress World Championship. Along with softball, she enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

Juanita never married, but loved caring for her nieces and nephews. She loved all of them very much. She will be truly missed.

Surviving Juanita are her three brothers-in-law, 32 nieces and nephews, 42 grand-nieces and grand-nephews, as well as her neighbors and good friends Bonnie and Betty Rae.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, three brothers, one niece, and one nephew. May they rest in peace.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 417 Main St. in Davenport. Burial with full military honors will be at Letts Cemetery in Letts, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., in Davenport. All are welcome to join her family to recite the rosary at 7:30 p.m. to close the visitation. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church or to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
