Girls roundup: Wike leads Sterling swimmers at Ottawa Pentathlon

Paced by overall champion Charli Wike, Sterling (12,878) finished second to Pontiac (13,282) at the five-team Ottawa
Pentathlon on Saturday.

Rounding out the field were Ottawa (11,899), Morris (10,954) and Morrison (10,499).

Wike amassed 4,179 points to run away with top individual honors. Her closest pursuer was Pontiac’s Sami Battle with 3,647.

Wike posted times of 31.61 in the 60 freestyle; 1:04.4 in the 100 butterfly; 1:03.38 in the 100 backstroke; 1:11.48 in the 100 breaststroke; and 2:05.37 in the 200 free.

Also swimming for Sterling were Emily McDonald (third, 3,486 points), Erin McCawley (10th, 3,038) and Avery Edwards (19th, 2,175).

Morrison’s Michaela Busch was fourth overall with 3,461 points.

Cross country

Warriors sixth at Geneseo: Sterling finished with 419 points to take sixth in the 10-team Geneseo Invitational. The point total is accumulated by combining freshman, sophomore, junior and senior results.

Leading the way for Sterling was Megan Barnhart, who led all freshmen with a time of 19:46. Also for Sterling, Mercedes Sanchez placed fourth among juniors with a time of 21:37.

Pitman leads Duchesses in Peoria: Katie Pitman finished 71st among 497 runners at the 58-team Richard Spring Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Pitman completed the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 39 seconds. McKenzie Yanek of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, won in 16:48.

Dixon was 30th with 809 points.


Duchesses third at Belvidere: Jessa Long accumulated 103 digs as the Dixon volleyball team split four matches and finished third at the Belvidere North Invitational.

Dixon (5-8) opened with a 20-25, 25-16, 18-25 loss to West Chicago, but bounced back with a 25-17, 25-17 victory over Freeport.

In the semifinals, the Duchesses fell to Belvidere North 22-25, 27-25, 23-25. They rebounded with a 27-25, 23-25, 25-20 win over Chicago Brooks in the third-place game.

Amy Rotella (32), Lexy Duncan (28) and Caitlin Rozek (25) combined for 84 kills. Rachel Gascoigne dished out 88 assists.

Rockets consolation champs at St. Viator: After dropping both pool-play matches, Rock Falls defeated Conant 21-25, 25-22, 25-11, Aurora
Central Catholic 25-22, 25-21, and Von Steuben 25-15, 25-14 to take the consolation bracket title.

Bailey O’Brien had 49 kills and 19 digs, and Bailey Schrader finished with 28 kills and five blocks for the Rockets (8-8). Dallas Clevenger spiked 23 kills, Kaylyn Booker had a team-high 22 digs, and Chelsi Blair set 61 assists.

Raiders fifth in Aledo: AFC split four matches and placed fifth at the Mercer County Invitational.

In pool play, the Raiders defeated Galva 25-17, 25-16 and lost to Geneseo 16-25, 25-16, 7-15 and Orion 14-25, 21-25.

AFC (6-6-1) defeated ROWVA 25-14, 25-18 for fifth place. Lexie Fore earned a spot on the all-tourney team by slamming down 23 kills.

Other leaders for AFC included Kayla Colwell (23 points, 18 digs, six aces), Cassidy Koning (18 digs, 14 kills), Krista Beach (12 kills) and Marissa Asbury (10 digs).

Missiles compete at Pearl City: Milledgeville dropped three matches and split one at the Pearl City Invitational.

In pool play, the Missiles fell to Warren 25-22, 25-23 and Stockton 25-12, 25-13, then split with Galena, 18-25, 25-14.

In the consolation round, Milledgeville lost to Orangeville 25-18, 25-11.

Eastland 2nd, Fulton winless in suburbs: The Cougars went 2-1 in pool play, then took second in the Silver Division, while Fulton went 0-5 at the 2-day Mount Pulaski Tournament.

Eastland beat Lincoln and PORTA and lost to Williamsville in pool play, then beat Bloomington Central Catholic in the Silver semifinals before falling to West Prairie.

On Saturday, Fulton lost to Monmouth-Roseville 25-23, 25-23, and PORTA 26-24, 25-21.

Betsy Leonard paced the Steamers with 28 kills and eight blocks. She was backed by Chelsea Lesniewski with 36 digs and 25 kills; and Rachael Beiermann with 43 assists, 34 digs and 22 kills.

Faith Christian def. Serena 25-15, 17-25, 25-23: Tressa Schuler had 18 kills, 16 digs and four blocks as the Falcons won a road match Friday.

Faith improved to 15-1.


Sterling 21st in Rockford: Michala Smith carded a 115 as Sterling (511) finished 21st in the 22-team Guilford Invitational at Ingersoll Golf Course.

College tennis

Moraine Valley 5, Sauk Valley 4: Kayla Wilson and Ashlyn Berogan each won singles and doubles matches for the Skyhawks in Palos Hills.
