Suggestions welcome here

I recently read an article in Outreach magazine titled, “100 Ideas for Any Church, Any Size.”

The introduction said, “We’re all looking for good ideas. How do we reach the community? Help guests make church connections? Foster an environment that leads people to embrace the church’s ministry vision and move from spectators to active participants?”

Here are a few ideas:

■ Leave on some outdoor lights: Just to remind people who may drive by after dark that you’re there.

■ Fix up the shrubbery out front: String white lights in the branches and make your church look like the happy, welcoming church it is.

■ Hold a Mom’s Day Out for local women: Provide child care, complete with games and activities for kids, and furnish refreshments.

■ Offer cooking classes using the church’s kitchen: Donate the food to PADS or Firehouse of God.

■ Hold a blessing of animals event: The first Sunday in October is World Animal Day. Invite the community to bring their pets, provide refreshments.

■ Consider the culture of your community and your target audience: That’s the reason for the “Welcome Seniors” recently.

■ Hold a “prom night” for older folks in the community: Decorate, offer refreshments, and have a dance with ’40s music.

■ Have volunteers stand outside grocery stores: Offer shoppers a free reusable shopping bag with your church’s name and logo on it. Ask them to fill it and donate it to the food pantries.

■ Show your local military families you support them: Have a cookout or potluck for veterans and their families.

■ Sponsor a school or classroom: Help teachers offset out-of-pocket costs of classroom supplies by donating them.

■ Hold a ladies’ car care clinic: Invite women and teens to learn how to check and change the fluids, fuses, tires, wiper blades and light bulbs.

Remember Trick or Trunk was a new idea a few years ago.
