Common Core standards to be meeting topics

The Sauk Valley Tea Party’s September meeting is being moved back one night. The August meeting on Common Core was well attended by parents, grandparents, teachers, school board members, administration and concerned citizens. We want to thank you for attending.

Due to the publicity on Common Core, we felt the need to move our meeting so people could attend the Parent Academy on Common Core that the Dixon School Board will be holding at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Dixon High School Auditorium. Come with your questions.

The Common Core Standards were not authorized by the Illinois Legislature. It was a decision of unelected officials from the State Board of Education. This was a way to be placed in the running for Race to the Top funding. So it’s all about money and is coming from the federal level.

Ask your state representative and senator what they know about Common Core. Let them know how you feel about it. HR 543 is being proposed to urge the State Board of Education to delay implementation of the Common Core Standards until studies are done on the cost.

Actually, there is more to the Common Core Standards than the money. What is being taught? What are the guidelines students are to get out of the material? What types of reading material are on the recommended reading lists?

Currently math and English are being focused on with Common Core. Next up is science. Let’s keep choices at the local level where parents have a say, not the state or federal level where the parents have little say.

Please join us at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rock Falls Eagles Club. Check out svtp.webs.com for more information.
