Sterling freshman’s hot streak continues against Streator
Tony Diaz's hat trick staked Sterling to a 3-0 halftime lead, and Carlos Gallardo added a second-half goal in the Golden Warriors' 4-1 victory Tuesday over Streator at Sterling Chevrolet Field at Roscoe Eades Stadium.
Gallardo assisted on two of Diaz's goals as Sterling improved to 4-1-3 by winning its NIB-12 West opener. The hat trick gave Diaz seven goals in the first 2 days this week.
Geneseo 2, Dixon 0: Dukes coach Mahmoud Etemadi called Brandon Jagitsch's 10-save performance "outstanding" in Dixon's Northern Illinois Big 12 West opener.
Midfielder and captain Scott Heath also stood out for the short-handed Dukes (0-7-1, 0-1 NIB-12 West), who are relying on many underclassmen, but held Geneseo scoreless for almost 60 minutes after allowing a goal in just the second minute.
Faith Christian 2, Quad City Christian 0: Andrew Robertson and Ben Bierdeman each scored goals for the Falcons in a road victory over Quad Cities Christian.
Mike DiGrazia added an assist for Faith Christian (1-1-1). Austin Slagter was the goalie.
Boys cross country
Dixon 24, UT 32: The Dukes' depth was too much for the Panthers in a dual at East Moline.
UT took two of the top 3 places, including winner Austin Webster (15:21.65), but runner-up Simon Thorpe (15:43.65) led a quintet of Dixon runners who finished in the top seven. Cody Sondgeroth (16:16.37) and Austin Trevino (16:41.71) rounded out the top 5.
Girls cross country
Dixon 15, UT 50: The Duchesses claimed the top eight spots in a dual at East Moline, led by Claire Thorpe's winning time of 20:18.06.
Also contributing to Dixon's minimum score were Katie Pitman (20:18.31), Mekenzie Harden (20:18.52), Courtney Seagren (20:32.06) and Ally Stanchfield (21:04.68).
Peoria Notre Dame 79, Sterling 75: The Golden Warriors won five events, but were edged out in the team standings in a dual meet at the Duis Center.
Charli Wike was part of three event wins. She won the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 17.90 seconds, and the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.56. Wike also teamed with Emily McDonald, Avery Edwards and Erin McCawley to win the 400 relay in 4:11.01.
McDonald also won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.12.
Edwards anchored the winning 200 relay team that included Jordan Totten, Indie Ackland and Elizabeth Cook. The team's time was 2:08.06.
Ottawa 69, Newman 22: Comets Carly Schaab and Alena Jensen each swam to a pair of runner-up finishes in a dual meet in Ottawa.
Schaab took second in the 160-yard IM (2:20.86) and 500-yard freestyle (7:14.66), while Jensen was runner-up in the 60-yard freestyle (34.65 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (1:03.54). Elexia Sanders added a second place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:44.18), and Linnea Larson took second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:23.25).
Newman 8, Kewanee 1: Mary Alice Oswalt, Christina Long, Emily Long, Chantel Ordean and Rachel Heiderscheit each won singles and doubles matches as the Comets topped the Boilermakers in Kewanee.
