Pancakes, pinwheels promote peace through YWCA efforts

STERLING – YWCA Week Without Violence will be Oct. 13-19.

Pancakes for Peace will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at YWCA of the Sauk Valley, 412 First Ave. During the free meal, those attending can socialize and register wishes for peace on a Wall of Wishes.

Pinwheels for Peace also will be displayed at the YWCA and throughout the community. Individuals of all ages, groups, churches, classes, and organizations are encouraged to create and decorate a pinwheel to help people imagine “whirled” peace.

“Pinwheels for Peace is something that everyone can participate in,” Rebecca Muñoz-Ripley, chairwoman of the event, said. “We hope school classes, church groups, friends, organizations, churches, and others will create lovely, beautiful, special, and unique pinwheels to help our community share the vision of world “whirled” peace.”

Pinwheels can be turned in to the YWCA anytime before or during the week.

Held annually since 1995, the week spotlights the YWCA’s anti-violence stance and programs. It is celebrated by YWCAs across the country and internationally.

The YWCA is a United Way agency working to eliminate racism and empower women.
