Mutts on the Mississippi fundraiser set for Saturday
CLINTON, Iowa – Runners, walkers and their canine friends are invited to cross the Mississippi River Saturday as part of a one-of-a-kind event.
Mutts on the Mississippi is being billed as the only bi-state canine run/walk in the country; it’s poised to be the largest fundraiser the Clinton Humane Society ever has held.
Participants and their four-legged friends will begin at 9 a.m. in Fulton, travel the 2-mile course and finish at Lyons Four Square Park in Clinton.
In addition to the race, there will be special events starting at 9 a.m. in the park, including a professional agility course demonstration, a canine costume contest, raffles, and vendors selling a variety of local dog-related merchandise. A unicyclist and a balloon animal artist will be on hand. There also will be doggie pools so the mutts can cool down after their landmark journey across the bridge.
Participants will get a Mutts on the Mississippi T-shirt and goodie bag stuffed with dog treats, a leash, the latest copy of Dog Fancy Magazine and other items. Each dog will get a commemorative bandana.
The first dog over the bridge will receive a large gift bag from dog-toy manufacturer, Kong and will be declared the “spokesdog” of the Clinton Humane Society, appearing on all billboards, fliers and other materials.
Prizes also will be awarded to the first humans and their dogs to cross the finish line. The first-place runner will get a trophy and the second- and third-place runners as well as the first three walkers to finish will get medals.
The award ceremony will be at noon in Four Square Park. The event will end around 2:30 p.m.
The Iowa 136 bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic the day of the event so the swarm of dogs and people can take part in the unique event.
